Renewable Energy Supporting Coral Conservation

Through the Tech4Nature initiative, Huawei, IUCN, and EcoMode Society launched a coral restoration project in Mauritius in 2020. At Pointe-aux-Feuilles, AI tools and remote monitoring support reef recovery, while local communities are trained in sustainable conservation, combining technology with ecological stewardship for long-term marine protection. The project aimed to grow 25,000 coral fragments and then transplant them back into degraded reefs to restore a 2,000-hectare reef cluster around Pointe-aux-Feuilles.
In this context, last year Ecoasis installed an off-grid solar system to power underwater cameras that monitor coral saplings: a key step in reef conservation and restoration. The setup includes eight high-efficiency 550 Wp panels, delivering a total system capacity of 4.4 kWp, and a 10 kWh battery, offering sustainable energy right where it matters most.
This meaningful initiative was made possible through a strong partnership with Ecomode Society, Ecoasis, Huawei and Ferme Marine de Mahébourg under Tech4Nature programme. The system has been carefully designed to operate efficiently in a marine environment, ensuring reliable power even in challenging conditions. It is a small installation making a big difference in protecting marine biodiversity.
